AEP DC Cook Nuclear Power Plant Defensive Strategies // Bridgman, MI
This project involved the structural design of a new security delay barrier around the facility with client-dictated security criteria. The delay barrier encompassed most of the buildings on the site, and multiple types of swing and sliding gates were incorporated into the delay barrier for personnel and transport access. The design also involved checking existing buildings for additional loads imposed by the delay barrier.
Project challenges included maintaining a tight schedule to meet a force-on-force testing deadline, aligning multiple stakeholders to meet desired outcomes and needs, unforeseen variables uncovered during construction that required resourcefulness and flexibility to update the solution without delaying construction, weather challenges due to the location on the shore of Lake Michigan and meeting local weather design codes for the structural elements.
